There have been over a hundred complaints to the Consumer Products Safety Commission. These complaints come from consumers experiencing sneezing, wheezing, itching, and other negative health issues caused by fiberglass particles that escaped from their mattresses. Fiberglass is often used as a flame retardant in some mattresses. It is cheap and, unfortunately, not banned nationwide. Medical toxicologist Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD, has studied this issue and released concerning data.

What is Fiberglass?

Fiberglass is made from extremely fine strands of glass and plastic. It’s commonly used in construction, insulation, and some consumer products, including mattresses. While it serves a purpose as a fire retardant, it poses significant health risks. People have reported health problems linked to exposure to fiberglass particles that may escape from mattresses.

Health Risks Associated with Fiberglass

Fiberglass exposure can lead to various health problems. People may experience respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and skin irritations. The symptoms often stem from inhaling tiny particles released when the mattress cover is damaged or removed. For individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions or skin sensitivities, the risks are even greater. A sufferer* went to social media to raise awareness about the health effects of exposure to fiberglass. TikToker @heart.led (41.6K followers) posted a video in April explaining that she discovered fiberglass in her mattress after removing the cover to clean it. "Now there is fiberglass all over my apartment—every surface," she says in the video, which has garnered over 4.3 million views. She outlined how she had to dispose of many belongings contaminated with fiberglass as a result.

Last week, a factory representative revealed shocking information: fiberglass is sprayed on most mattresses during production. Unbelievable! None of those products will be sold in my store.

In addition, a customer brought i photographs of a mattress (no fiberglass on the law tag) that showed fiberglass poking through the cover. Scary stuff!
